The Anti-Counterfeit Authority of Kenya (ACA) and Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen strategic collaboration between the two parties to deter illegitimate shipments of counterfeit and illicit goods in the region.

Celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2023 in Kenya; Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity

Nairobi, Kenya – The Anti-Counterfeit Authority and Kenya Industrial Property Institute joins the world in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day (WAPD) on April 26, 2023. The WAPD aims to raise public awareness of the role of intellectual property rights in encouraging innovation and creativity.

This year’s theme is: “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovating and Creativity” gives focus to the role of women promotion of creativity and innovation for social- economic development of the society.

Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding Between the Anti Counterfeit Authority of Kenya And Uganda’s Anti Counterfeit Network Limited to Fight Counterfeits

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority of Kenya (ACA) and Uganda’s Anti-Counterfeit Network Limited (ACN Africa) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on April 20, 2023 at Nairobi to strengthen strategic collaboration on matters pertaining to counterfeit goods in the East African region.

Speaking at the Press Conference, ACA’s Executive Director Dr. Robi Mbugua Njoroge said “the MoU represents a statement of mutual intentions between our two institutions focusing on developing and strengthening a robust IP system in the region.”

UK and Kenya in Anti-Counterfeiting and Intellectual Property Protection Dialogue

Trade relations between Kenya and United Kingdom are set to benefit as talks on joint efforts against counterfeit trade were discussed at a meeting between the Anti-Counterfeit Authority Kenya and UK representatives.

The meeting held in Nairobi was organized under the banner “UK-Kenya anti-counterfeit & IP protection dialogue” sought to strengthen strategic collaboration on IP issues between the two nations.

Expansion of Regulated HS Codes for Phase II Implementation of Import Declaration of IPRS

In reference to our Public Notice 4/2022 concerning the implementation of the Recordation of Intellectual Property Rights and ACA Import Permit process, we would like to inform our stakeholders that the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) has expanded the program, in compliance with the Article 40(5) of the Constitution, the Anti-Counterfeit Act No. 13 of 2008 (Section 34B) and the Anti-Counterfeit {Recordation} Regulations LN 118/2021 (R4).

We are pleased to inform you that the recordation of Intellectual Property Rights and ACA Import Permit process was successfully launched on January 1, 2023. As part of our continued commitment to combating counterfeiting in Kenya, we are expanding this process to include additional HS Codes, effective May 1, 2023.

US Customs and Border Protection in discussion to host the First International Conference on Intellectual Protection and Enforcement in Nairobi

The partnership was discussed during a visit by Mr. Benito Montiel the US Customs and Border Protection Commercial Attache' who paid courtesy call to Dr. Robi Njoroge Mbugua Executive Director of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority.

The three-day International Conference will be the first in Kenya and will be held from 13th -15th June 2023 as a climax in commemorating the World Anti-Counterfeit Day 2023.

The conference will bring together policymakers, judicial officers, enforcers, leading academic scientists, research scholars and practitioners to exchange and share their experiences and research results on targeted aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.

ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Re-Certification Award Ceremony

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority celebrated the re-award of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Certification in colorful ceremony during the launch of the 3rd strategic plan at the Weston hotel in Nairobi.  

The award was formally handed over by the National Standards Council, NSC, Chairperson, Dr. Kamau Kinyua, alongside KEBS Managing Director, Lt Col (Rtd.) Bernard Njiraini and other KEBS senior managers.

Dr. Kinyua praised ACA's commitment to implementing the standard saying it was a demonstration of commitment to customer satisfaction and continual improvement. ‘Choosing to be certified does not only prove commitment to best practice, but also that excellence matters to the Authority” he said.

3rd Strategic Plan Launch

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority launched its 3rd strategic plan for the period between 2022/2023 to 2026/2026 at the Weston hotel in Nairobi. The new plan is a revamped strategy to promote and protect Intellectual Property rights and seeks to address key constraints in the war against counterfeits and illicit trade experienced in the last ten years.

Speaking at the event, the Chief guest, Principal Secretary of State Department of Industry Dr. Juma Mukhwana said the government was keen to ensure protection of intellectual property rights and eradication of counterfeit and illicit trade. He said IP infringement needed to be tackled coherently as a strategic economic enabler for the country since trade in counterfeits undermines fair trade, industry and development agenda of the government.

Change of Guard: Hon. Josephat Kabeabea Takes Over as Chairman of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority

NAIROBI, KENYA, 13th February 2023

Hon. Josephat Kabeabea is now the Chairman of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority after his appointment by the Cabinet Minister of the Ministry of Investment Trade and Industry. He takes over from the Ms. Flora Mutahi who was serving her second term at the Authority.

During the handover ceremony, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority Executive Director, Dr. Robi Mbugua Njoroge thanked the outgoing Chair for her outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment in the war against counterfeit and illicit trade in the country.  

Ms. Flora Mutahi played a great role in the development of the national strategy to combat Illicit Trade. It is the strategy that laid down the ‘The National Action Plan and Implementation Framework to Combat Illicit Trade 2019/2020 - 2021/2022’. The plan developed through public participation involved collaboration between Anti-Illicit Trade Multi-Agency Teams as well as the private sector led by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) and the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA in the war against counterfeit and illicit trade.

ACA gets ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Re-certification

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority has been re-awarded ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Certification at a handover ceremony held on December 1, 2022, at Its headquarters in Nairobi.  

The Executive Director of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority Dr. Robi Njoroge Mbugua who was accompanied by staff and Senior members of management received the Award. Speaking at the Ceremony, he said that “This is a very important achievement for the Authority and I wish to applaud members of staff for continuously embracing the quality management system in services provision.” he said.

DCI Director General Amin Mohammed Opens a Training Forum for Anti-Counterfeit Inspectors

The Director General of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation Mr. Amin Mohammed officially opened an ACA Enforcement officers training forum at the DCI Academy in South C.  

The DCI Academy is a regional premier law enforcement learning and research institution tasked with training in matters of investigations in the National Police Service Authority and has a long experience in training criminal investigation enforcement officers.   

Implementation of Recordation of Intellectual Property Rights for Imports

Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) is a statutory body established under the Anti-Counterfeit Act of 2008. ACA is the principal government agency mandated to prohibit trade in counterfeit goods in Kenya.

Following the Extension of the deadline for the commencement of the Recordation of IP Rights for Imports from 1st July 2022 to 1st January 2023 (six months), the Authority wishes to inform stakeholders and members of the public that ACA will commence the Recordation of IP Rights for Imports on 1st January 2023.

US National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center Training on IP Rights

Kenyan Intellectual Property Rights investigators and judges, prosecutors, regulators and customs officials from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Pharmacy and Poisons Board and the Kenya Bureau of Standards received training on Intellectual Property Rights to target transnational criminal networks.

ACA and KIPI in Revamped Plan to Fortify Promotion and Protection of Intellectual Property Rights

Effort geared to heightening existing collaboration in public outreach, education and collaboration in research and innovation.

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority and the Kenya Industrial Property Institute today announced renewed efforts in collaboration to promote and protect intellectual property rights in the country. In a meeting attended by Dr Robi Njoroge Mbugua and Mr. John Onyango, the Acting Managing Director, the institutions agreed to coordinate in public and private sector efforts to combat intellectual property theft in the country.

Kenya’s Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Agencies participate in workshop on Recordation of IP Rights

Kenyan enforcement agencies tasked with the protection of intellectual property rights underwent a two-day sensitization workshop on Intellectual Property Rights recordation at the Movenpick Hotel in Nairobi. The training held from 4th to 5th October 2022, aimed at increasing the front-line enforcement officers’ skills in the recordation of intellectual property rights. 

The workshop was sponsored by the Africa Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project in Africa (AfrIPI) through funding from the European Union and implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office – EUIPO. It brought together ACA Enforcement officers, first-line enforcement officers from other governments, and key stakeholders in the IP control process in Kenya. 

Kenya-Uganda Agencies in Bid for Corporation to Tackle Trade in Counterfeit Trade

Kenya’s Anti-Counterfeit Authority and Ugandan Anti-Counterfeit Network Africa (CAN) held a meeting today “to exchange ideas on how better to improve collaboration in the fight against counterfeit trade with a major call for regional cooperation to tackle the problem”. ACN is a not-for-profit registered entity in Uganda that aims to bridge the intervention gaps between the multiple stakeholders that affect and are being affected by counterfeits and illicit trade.
